The Complex Business & Legal Affairs team is seeking a senior level Attorney to negotiate, draft and manage various agreements in support of the acquisition, production and distribution of video programming  -- both editorial and branded -- as well as to provide day-to-day support in a variety of general business issues emerging in a start-up media enterprise.  This attorney will work closely with Los Angeles & New York based colleagues and will report into Complex’s SVP of Business and Legal Affairs.

The Attorney must have substantive transactional experience from a respected law practice, studio or television network and be able to apply strategic negotiation and drafting skills.  The individual must be able to work independently, multi-task under pressure, manage a varied, high-volume workload efficiently and smoothly and have the ability to independently exercise sound judgment and perform under tight deadlines with minimal supervision.

  • Negotiate and draft development and production agreements for films, series and other original content productions across all media platforms (e.g., rights acquisition, talent agreements, producer agreements, license agreements, co-finance agreements, guild and union agreements and other agreements in connection with the development and production of original content)
  • Negotiate and draft agreements for the development and production of branded and sponsored content across all platforms and develop guidelines and best practices for Complex’s sales organizations with respect thereto
  • As the senior Attorney in Complex’s Los Angeles offices, manage general business and legal affairs matters typically required of a studio and/or a network, including merchandise, live events, intellectual property, music, employment, and performing other day-to-day business and legal affairs-related tasks as needed
  • Supervise and manage a production-focused group of attorneys and business affairs professionals

  • JD from an accredited law school of strong reputation
  • Active member of California bar or eligible for Registered In-House Counsel status
  • 10-15 years of business/legal affairs experience in a network, studio, entertainment law firm or production company environment
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, communication (written and verbal), interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Thorough understanding of current market content acquisition and production terms, labor/guild/union issues and native advertising/branded content compliance requirements
  • Strong management skills with the ability to successfully supervise employees in remote locations
